This rug was made by the talented Amazigh (Berber) artists we partner with in Morocco. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to connect with these women to supply them with everything they need for production and ensure they are paid fairly. They no longer have to wait for middle-man merchants to pass through their villages offering to buy rugs at too low cost to then resell to larger rug houses in the major cities across Morocco. Most of the women we work with weave at home while others work in local collectives with other weavers together. It is a beautiful community of sisterhood and shared experience gathered around craft. These rugs are handmade utilizing the same traditional construction they have been made for hundreds of years. By purchasing a newly constructed rug from OUIVE you are supporting fair pay and keeping the traditions of handmaking rugs alive as a viable way to earn a living so that these traditions can be passed on through the next generation.

All of our rugs are handmade in Morocco by women using traditional techniques of the nomadic Amazigh (Berber) tribes. Each tribe possesses its own distinctive style defined by color, pattern, technique and materials. Because the Amazigh language was traditionally non-written, women utilized rug making as a medium of personal expression and story telling passed down over generations. Traditionally the women do not work from any preset plans, but instead respond intuitively to their looms row by row revealing the full composition of their creation only once the rug is completed and removed from the loom. Each rug takes several weeks to months to create.

All rugs are as sold “as is” with the understanding that any “vintage” rugs are pre-owned and subject to normal wear consistent with age. Any cleaning or restorations are made at our discretion prior to shipping. If you would like to make a cleaning or restoration requests please let us know before placing your order.
